Shopping in Barbados

 Limegrove Mall, Barbados

IMG 1079 300x225 Shopping in Barbados

I was so excited to visit Barbados’ newest  mall, Limegrove which was opened a few months before Christmas.  It’s a beautiful upscale mall located  in Holetown, St. James on the west coast of Barbados, our famous gold coast.  It is acutually called Limegrove Life Style Centre which is our first multi-use centre which includes beautiful luxury loft sytle residences such as apartments, townhouses and penthouses. Limegrove  is in a great location, close to beautiful beaches, Sandy Lane, Westmoreland and  Apes Hill. If you are looking for a place to shop in Barbados, this IMG 1082 150x150 Shopping in Barbadosis the place to be.  It’s very pricey but if you are looking for a place to have lunch or to meet someone, it’s great.  I love the ambiance with the water-fall and lots of greenery, such as plants and trees.

There are boutiques, restaurants, delis, cafes, bars, gourmet foods, an art gallery, cinemas, a spa and salon. Some of the IMG 1087 150x150 Shopping in Barbadosstores in our beautiful mall include, A|X Armani Exchange, Cartier, Dior, Diamonds International, Gucci, Hallmark, Jorge Bischoff, Kartushe, Kitchen Sync, Lime Bar, Limegrove Cinemas, The Loft, Louis Vuitton, M.A.C., Michael Kors, Miche Bag, Montblanc, Ralph Lauren, Tag Heuer…just to name a few.  What makes this mall unique,  are the Loft style luxury residences which include apartments, townhouses and penthouses.  I truly enjoyed my trip there and look forward to going back on my next trip. Go lime and dine at Limegrove on your next visit to Barbados.

In Barbados on holiday – looking for fast food

IMG 13001 300x225 In Barbados on holiday looking for fast food

Chefette:
One of the first places I go when I get to Barbados is Chefette.  Chefette is the leading fast food restaurant in Barbados.  There are about 14 locations throughout the island. There’s a drive-through window at most locations.  Most locations also have playgrounds for kids.
I go there for the rotis (stewed chicken or beef with or without potatoes in a flour wrap) and mauby, the drink I love when I am in Barbados. Other fast foods at Chefette include fried chicken, pizza with pineapple, burgers and french fries.  I also like to go there for ice cream.  My favourite flavour is Calypso Coconut.  It is yummy.
Be sure to stop by one of the Chefettes in Barbados and have a bajan experience.

Granny’s in Oistins
:
Granny’s is a takeaway restaurant in Oistins, Christ Church.  It serves local food.  I added Granny’s to fast food because the food is already prepared. You select the food items you want, pay and you are on your way.  It’s not buffet style.  There are servers.  On my last trip, I had macaroni pie with a large piece of marlin fish and salad. The food tasted so good and it lasted two days. My friend had peas and rice with baked chicken and salad.  I can say the food is good and the portions are big.  It is well worth a visit on your next trip, so check it out.

Chicken Barn:
Chicken Barn is a family owned company that has been around for about 40 years.  There are three location in Barbados: Bay Street, Warrens and Hastings.  I love Chicken barn’s rotisserie chicken. It’s delicious and I can remember eating it as a teenager.  I have some pretty good memories of Friday nights eating Chicken Barn’s chicken with family and friends.  I usually visit the Hastings location because it’s close to where I stay when I am in Barbados. The staff is courteous and the place is clean. The menu also include burgers and fish sandwiches but I haven’t tried anything except the chicken. Try it on your next visit. You wouldn’t be disappointed.

Kentucky Fried Chicken:
Another fast food restaurant is Kentucky Fried Chicken.  They are located throughout the island.  Some have drive through windows.  I haven’t been to any of the locations but I have had the chicken and it was quite good.  If you are visiting Barbados, and you are in the mood for some fast food, check out any of the restaurants listed here.

Sharing my experiences in Barbados

IMG 0990 300x225 Sharing my experiences in Barbados

I just got back from Barbados after spending a month for Christmas and New Year.  I really enjoyed being there.  It was wonderful.  The weather was great.  The nights were unusually cool.  During the day it was very breezy.  Of course I visited the beach but the water was very cold and I forced myself to go into the water.  Once I was in the water, it was great.  I wish I could do that every day. I enjoyed seeing many sunsets.  That’s one of my favourite things to do when I am in Barbados.
I visited all eleven (11) parishes and I am excited to share my experiences with you.  I visited:

  • Our new mall, Limegrove in Holetown, St. James – awesome
  • Chalky Mount, one of our potteries in St. Andrew
  • Speightstown, St. Peter
  • Bridgetown, St. Michael
  • St. Lawrence Gap, Christ Church
  • Boardwalk in Hastings, Christ Church

Just to mention a few.  Look out for my posts on my holiday in Barbados.  I can’t wait to share with you.  If you have been in Barbados recently, please share your experiences.

St. Lawrence Gap

IMG 1017 300x225 St. Lawrence Gap BarbadosNo holiday in Barbados is complete without a visit to St. Lawrence Gap on the South Coast. It’s a small street almost a mile long. It’s all happening at  “The Gap” as it is called. I enjoy my visits there because there’s no place like it on the island.  It is filled with hotels, restaurants, nightlife and souvenir shopping. Behind the hotels and restaurants is beautiful Dover Beach.
IMG 1002 300x225 St. Lawrence Gap BarbadosMy first stop is at the beginning of the street where there is a  small boardwalk. I like to watch the calm water and admire the different colour boats along the beach. At night, St. Lawrence Gap comes alive.  It is filled with all types of entertainment such as calypso, jazz, karaoke and reggae.  You can see tourists and locals strolling along the narrow street, food vendors selling freshly cooked Bajan foods.  It’s the place to be if you are looking for nightlife in Barbados. I like taking a stroll at night with my ‘guy’.  He likes the hamburgers from one of the vendors so we go to get the tasty burgers.  Trust me they are good.  St. Lawrence Gap is a good mixture of everything, tourist and local.
IMG 1007 300x225 St. Lawrence Gap BarbadosThere’s an old Church at the beginning of St. Lawrence Gap and I believe it is still functional and has Sunday services. Further in on the street are newly built multi-million dollars condos and a few small private homes. There is a Chattel House Village where  ”De Hideaway Bar” is located.  That’s where I go to get local cuisine and see my friend Andy when she’s visiting from Canada. Stop by the next time you visit and have a Banks beer (made in Barbados) at ”De Hideaway Bar.
Have you been to St. Lawrence Gap?  It ‘s a place that should not be missed when you are in Barbados.

My favourite places to eat in Barbados

Places to eat in Barbados

0852 300x225 My favourite places to eat in Barbados

Brown Sugar is one of my favourite places to eat in Barbados.  I go there for the buffet lunch.  It is located in St. Michael not far from Bridgetown. It offers a daily all-you-can-eat buffet lunch which includes a variety of Bajan foods, including cou cou and flying fish, peas and rice, macaroni pie, pudding and souse and many other island dishes.  The food is delicious, the staff is friendly and service is very good.  I love the garden setting. The decor brings the outside inside and you are surrounded by beautiful plush greenery with fern foliage. It seems like it could be romantic at night.  Haven’t had a chance to try it for dinner but will do so on my next visit.  I believe dinner is only on Monday Nights. My mom loves to go to Brown Sugar and goes there for every celebration.  The location is easy to get to and it’s a short walk away from the beach. You have to try Brown Sugar Restaurant the next time you visit.  If you have, please share your experience.

Fisherman’s Pub

Fisherman’s Pub is where I go almost every time I visit Barbados.  It is located in Speightstown, St. Peter on the Northern side of the island.  It’s close to the Bus terminal.  I go there because it’s right on the water, it’s not fancy but very Bajan.  You can sit inside or outside in the sunshine and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the beach. For me the Fisherman’s Pub is one of the places to eat in Barbados. The food is very good..typical local food. No wait service. You select your food and take it to your table.  The staff is good and the owner is friendly and courteous.  If you are looking for local cuisine and Bajan hospitality this is the place to visit.  When you go there, look out for the bakery down the street.  The smell always gets me.  I somehow end up at the bakery every time and leave with a bag of freshly baked pastries.  I can’t remember the name of the bakery but will update you with the name.

Hilton Barbados

HiIton Barbados is located at Needham’s Point in St. Michael.  The beach is right outside the door.  How awesome is that? I had a fantastic Sunday Brunch at the Hilton Hotel.  The food was delicious and the variety of food was unbelievable.  I couldn’t even sample everything…too much food.  There was the regular Bajan food plus sushi and other seafood…such good tasting food. It was a wonderful evening with my family and friends…16 of us compliments of my sister. What an evening!!!  Thanks to my sister. The service was very good.  We were entertained by some of the staff which I thoroughly enjoyed. It is one of the places to eat in Barbados with it’s extensive bars and restaurants for any occasion.  I heard breakfast is also quite good too but haven’t tried it yet. The next time I am in Barbados I will definitely try the breakfast and write a post.  The Hilton is also used for business lunches, conferences, weddings and other events.

My favourite Bajan Foods
Bajan foods!!!  I love Bajan food. I am excited to share this blog with you. When I go to Barbados, the first thing I want to eat is a roti (curry stew with chicken/beef with or without potatoes in a flour wrap)..that’s the best way I can describe a roti.  You just have to try it.  I have my roti with a tall glass of mauby with lots of ice.

 My favourite Bajan foods
Home-made Cou Cou

The bajan foods I enjoy most are: cou cou and flying fish which is Barbados’ national dish, any kind of fish, fishcakes, macaroni pie, sweet potato pie, pumpkin fritters and the list goes on.  You can imagine..I gain weight whenever I am there. On Saturdays, it’s pudding and souse with breadfruit which is a must have for many Bajans. Coconut breads, turnovers, conkies and of course Bajan salt breads are my choices for pastries.  I  like home-made bakes and I have had some very good ones made especially for me by my ‘special’ guy. They were delicious. The best bakes I have tasted in a long time.  He can really cook.  Love his cou cou. When I was there a few months ago, he cooked some delicious Bajan foods for me which I really enjoyed. Barbados is very hot so I am always thirsty. To quench my thirst, I love love mauby but I was recently introduce to golden apple juice and green mango juice…wow, those are good.  You have got to try them.

Farley Hill National Park

 Farley Hill National Park

Farley Hill National ParkOne of the places I like to visit is Farley Hill National Park.  It is located in St. Peter across the street from Barbados Wildlife Reserve. There are many beautiful mahogany trees and an old mansion which is now in  ruins.  This mansion was once used in the film ‘Island in the Sun’ in 1965.  It was later destroyed by fire. Farley National Park was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth in 1966.

Musical events such as the Barbados Jazz Festival and Reggae on the Hill have been held at Farley Hill.  It is also used as a place for picnics (excursions) on bank holidays.  I love to walk to the top of the hill.  The views from there are breath-taking.  It is amazing how beautiful and breezy it is at the top of the hill. Sometimes it is cloudy and although the views are good my photos don’t come out that well. I was there a few months ago during the Easter holidays.  It was a windy and clear day with the spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean  I am sharing with you. I sat at the top of the hill and had lunch with my special guy. What an awesome afternoon.

I have had great experiences with some beautiful memories there.  Have you been to the Farley Hill National Park? Would you like to share your experience?  I would love to hear from you.

Enjoying a walk on Barbados Boardwalk

Broadwalk 300x225 Enjoying a walk on Barbados Boardwalk

I love to walk on the Barbados Boardwalk in Hastings, Christ Church on the south coast. The Boardwalk is about a mile long (1.6km)  and starts at the famous Accra beach. I walk in the evening to see the beautiful sunsets.  The scene from the boardwalk is magnificent…pure natural beauty and for me it has a very calming effect.  I enjoy hearing the ocean and seeing the waves as they come ashore. On one side of the Boardwalk is the ocean and on the other side there are a number of restaurants, hotels and private homes. Across the street is Chefette, Barbados’ leading fast food restaurant, more hotels and a small shopping mall.

There are places along the way to sit and take it all in. People go to the Boardwalk for their daily run or just to sit and chat with friends. On the Boardwalk you will find tourist, local people, young, old, teens and , families just strolling, running, talking, sitting. Some people take the opportunity to do a little fishing. I met people as I do my evening walk and have had great conversations. There was a Boardwalk Bar where I would stop and have water and even a pina colada after my walk.  That’s where I met my friends Anne, she used to be the chef there but the bar is no longer there.  I was disappointed to see it gone.

For me, the best time to walk the Boardwalk is for the sunrise or the awesome sunsets. Depending on what time of the year I am visiting, I try to catch the sunsets between 6 and 6:30 pm. Have you been to the Barbados Boardwalk?  What was your experience?

Check out the beautiful sunsets, taken as I walked on the Boardwalk.
